Speaking on BFM Business this morning, Lyon President Jean-Michel Aulas confirmed that the club would be taking around a €2m hit for the French government’s decision to insist that Ligue 1 matches are played behind closed doors or in front of a maximum of 1,000 individuals until April 5th, as France continues to combat the COVID-19 outbreak.
Later on in the day, this order was superseded by the LFP’s decision to enforce a ruling that all Ligue 1 and Ligue 2 matches would be played behind closed doors with no supporters until April 15th.
“The local authorities in the Rhône-Alpes region have decided that Lyon vs Reims should be played behind closed doors. This is a considerable financial hit. For a Ligue 1 match, that is around €2m in terms of ticket sales.”
But! have done the math and with the number of home games that Lyon still have to play this season, both for the men’s 1st team and the women’s, they reckon that on ticket sales alone the club will lose €20m if the ban is maintained for the rest of the 2019/20 campaign.
